Color Correction for Faded Photos and Slides

Color correction is what brings a photograph back from that washed-out orange or magenta cast that decades of storage leave behind. Color film and color prints were never built to last forever — the dyes shift at different rates, and the result is the faded look almost every family album develops.

Why old photos change color

Prints from the 1960s to the 1990s used dyes that fade unevenly. Cyan usually goes first, which is why so many old photographs drift toward red. Slides stored in warm attics shift faster than prints kept in a drawer. Heat, humidity and light all accelerate it, and once the dye is gone it cannot come back on its own.

What color correction can recover

A surprising amount. Scanning captures more information than your eye sees in the faded print, and careful color correction rebalances the channels to reveal skin tones, sky and clothing close to the original. We work image by image rather than applying one filter to a whole batch, because a wedding photo and a beach snapshot need different treatment.

What it cannot fix

Where a dye layer is completely gone, or a print has been bleached by direct sunlight, no amount of color correction invents the missing information. We will tell you honestly before charging for restoration work that will not deliver.

How Our Color Correction Process Works

Every image is scanned first at high resolution, capturing far more tonal information than the faded print shows to the naked eye. From that scan we assess which dye layers have shifted and by how much. Color correction then rebalances each channel individually rather than applying a blanket filter, because the cyan loss that turns a print orange needs different handling from the yellowing of an old slide mount.

Batch versus individual treatment

Cheap services run everything through one automated preset. That works for a handful of images and ruins the rest, because photographs taken indoors, outdoors, on different film stocks and in different decades have fundamentally different color problems. We group images by their characteristics and treat each group properly.

Restoration beyond color

Color correction often reveals other damage once the cast is removed: scratches, dust, creases, torn corners. We can repair these too. Ask about restoration when you drop off and we will show you the difference on a sample image before you commit to the whole set.

What to expect back

You receive both versions — the honest scan of the photograph as it is today, and the corrected version. Some families want only the restored files; others like keeping both. Storage is cheap, so we deliver both by default.
