Born Digital Media Still Needs Preserving

Born digital media means everything that was never physical to begin with — phone photos and video, camcorder memory cards, digital camera files, voice memos, and the folders sitting on old laptops and external drives.

Why born digital media is at risk

People assume digital files are safe because they are not fading like a photograph. In practice we see the opposite: hard drives fail without warning, phones are lost, cloud accounts lapse when a card expires or a password is forgotten, and proprietary camera formats stop opening in modern software. A shoebox of prints survives neglect for fifty years. A hard drive in a drawer often does not survive ten.

What we do with born digital media
