Flash Drive Transfer: Choosing How to Store Your Files

A flash drive transfer is how most of our customers take their memories home. It plugs into any computer or smart TV, needs no software, and holds a lifetime of photos in something the size of a thumb. But a flash drive is a delivery method, not a permanent archive — and knowing the difference protects your files.

How long does a flash drive last?

Treated well, five to ten years. Left in a hot car, dropped, or stored in a damp basement, far less. Flash memory holds a charge, and that charge slowly leaks over years of sitting unplugged. This is why we recommend a flash drive transfer as your working copy and a second location as your backup.

The three-copy rule

Keep your files in three places: the flash drive we give you, your computer, and somewhere off-site such as a cloud account or a drive at a relative’s house. If a pipe bursts or a laptop is stolen, you still have your family history. Copying files from the flash drive onto a computer takes five minutes and costs nothing.

Other options we offer

For larger collections an external hard drive is more economical than several flash drives. For sharing across a family we can supply a cloud download link so relatives anywhere can save their own copies. Some customers still want DVDs for an older player, and we are happy to make those too. Tell us how you actually watch things and we will suggest the format that fits.

Flash drive transfer of digitized photos and video

Labelling and organization

Files arrive on your flash drive sorted into clearly named folders — by tape, by album, by year where we can establish it. Nothing is dumped into a single directory with camera-generated filenames. If you have a preferred structure, tell us before we start and we will follow it.

Playing your files

Video plays on any computer, smart TV or media player that accepts USB. Photos open in any viewer. Audio plays anywhere. We avoid proprietary formats specifically so that no future software change locks you out of your own memories.

Adding to your archive later

Bring the same flash drive back when you have more material and we will add to it, keeping the folder structure consistent so the collection grows as one archive rather than several unrelated batches.

Flash drive transfer turnaround

Your flash drive transfer is prepared as the last step of the job, once every item has been checked. For most orders that means the drive is ready the same day the transfers finish. Larger collections are staged so you can collect a first drive while the rest is still in progress, rather than waiting for everything.

Replacing a lost drive

We keep your finished files on our systems for ninety days after collection. If the flash drive is lost or damaged within that window, we can supply a replacement copy for the cost of the drive rather than redoing the entire transfer. After ninety days the files are removed for privacy, which is why the three-copy rule matters.
